Students who can’t convince parents and teachers enough that spending most of your time on networking sites is not a waste, can now reason well. Researchers at the University of Minnesota have discovered educational benefits of social networking sites.
“We found out that students using networking sites are actually practising the kind of 21st century skills we need to develop to be successful today,” said Christine Greenhow, a learning technologies researcher in the university and principal investigator of the study. Read more
Google rolls out Chrome app for Android 4.0
Google Inc, seeking to get more of its desktop-computer software onto mobile devices, introduced a test version of its Chrome Web browser for the latest Android operating system.
The browser, first unveiled in 2008, will be available on tablets and mobile phones using the company’s “Ice Cream Sandwich” Android software, Sundar Pichai, a senior vice president in charge of Chrome and applications, said in a blog posting. Read more
Wipro’s campus placement goes new
Wipro, one of the largest campus recruiters in India, will not rely on its usual HR team to net students this year. Instead, its entourage will include several general managers who will represent the company in their respective alma maters.
The top brass from this year onwards has been given the responsibility of adopting their colleges, engaging with students throughout the year and being ” brand ambassadors” for the company. 2G scam: SC verdict may affect 10,000 jobs in telecom sector
The Supreme Court order canceling 121 2G spectrum licences is likely to impact around 10,000 jobs in the telecom sector. Telecom sector experts estimate that the operations in the cancelled licences involve approximately 4,000 direct jobs and over 6,000 indirect jobs. These are in areas like telecom sales, customer support and tower management and maintenance. Read more
Your mobile bills to go up 30% in 2012
Mobile phone bills of consumers will rise 20-30% this year, top executives of all leading operators said, as the country’s debt-ridden telcos raise call tariffs to revive revenue growth and cut losses in the fiercely competitive sector.
The move follows the 20% increase last July, the first hike after operators slashed tariffs in 2008 as they chased new customers, but ended up eroding profits. It comes at a time telcos are staring at penalties and fines running into thousands of crores of rupees for a range of alleged violations. Read more
TCS opens new facility in Silicon Valley
Expanding its presence in the US, India’s IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has opened a new facility here which was welcomed by the US lawmakers and the Californian government.
Just a few blocks away from the Yahoo’s corporate headquarters, the facility, among other things, would serve as the worldwide headquarters of TCS’ Mobility Solutions Unit which aims to bring the benefits of emerging technologies like big data, analytics and mobility to enterprises across all industries. Apple wins patent ruling against HTC
HTC Corp’s loss in a patent infringement case against Apple Inc casts doubt on its decision to spend $300 million buying S3 Graphics Co. to boost the chances of a licensing deal to end the dispute.
The US International Trade Commission said yesterday that S3 Graphics’s patent rights weren’t violated by Apple, rejecting a request for an order that could have limited imports of some Mac computers, the iPhone and iPad. The commission gave no reason for its decision. HTC said it may challenge the ruling in a US appeals court that specializes in patent law. Read more
