Dassault Rafale wins MMRCA deal beating Eurofighter Typhoon
French company Dassault Rafale today bagged India’s biggest-ever contract for supplying 126 combat aircraft for the air force, edging out European competitor EADS in the multi-billion dollar deal.
The French firm was declared as the lowest bidder, according to which it will get the contract under India’s defence procurement procedure, sources said. Read more
Sitting and former MPs owe MTNL over Rs.9 crore
Sitting and former MPs from various parties owe a staggering Rs.9 crore to state-run telecom provider MTNL, over and above the free calls they are allowed, a reply to a Right to Information (RTI) query revealed Tuesday.
The reply lists 399 MPs who alone owe Rs.7.10 crore dues to MTNL, followed by Rs.1.97 crore owed by six sitting members. Read more
Howrah-Dehradun Express catches fire, seven dead
At least seven people including two children were charred to death when two AC coaches of the Howrah-Dehradun express train caught fire early Tuesday in Giridih district of Jharkhand, police said.
“Seven people, including two children, died after two coaches of the Howrah-Dehradun express caught fire. Four bodies have been identified. The fire has been extinguished,” D Parwa Lakra, deputy commissioner of Giridih, said. Read more

Powerful blast outside Delhi high court, many injured
An explosion was reported outside Delhi high court gate number 5 on Wednesday morning. Many were reported to have been injured in the incident.
The Delhi Police have cordoned off the area. The injured have been taken to RML and Safdarjung hospitals. Fire tenders have been rushed to the spot. Read more
MiG-21 crashes in Punjab, pilot ejects
Within a period of one month, one more MiG-21 of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed near Rajpura in Punjab on Tuesday morning. However, it was a miraculous escape for the pilot, Flight Lt Arnav Ghosh, who ejected safely. No civilian causality was reported as it crashed in the open fields.
Earlier on August 2 this year, a MiG-21 was crashed in Bikaner soon after taking off from Naal airfield in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district killing the pilot. Read more
Mining scam: Reddy brothers had businesses in foreign countries too, says CBI
CBI sources said that Gali Janardhana Reddy and Srinivasa Reddy had businesses in foreign countries as well.
CBI investigations have revealed that Gali Janardhana Reddy and his brothers owned six companies in foreign countries including Mauritius and Virgin Islands. These companies diverted money paid by the Chinese companies for iron ore export. The CBI is now verifying the flow of funds into the country. Read more
Rajiv killers get 8 weeks’ breather from Madras HC
The Madras high court on Tuesday stayed the September 9 execution of three assassins of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi for eight weeks even as the Tamil Nadu assembly appealed to President Pratibha Patil to reconsider their mercy pleas.
The interim stay came on a review petition of the death row convicts Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan.
A division bench comprising justice C Nagappan and justice M Satyanaranan directed the Centre to explain the delay 11 years and four months in the rejection of the trio’s clemency petitions. Read more
