Growing older is inevitable, but looking your age is not – and slashing years off your aging body starts with eating the right foods.

A healthy diet loaded with lean protein and whole grains will allow you to retain muscle tone but lose excess fat as you age, while plenty of antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies will help stave off those wrinkles.

Actor Priyanka Chopra, 28, spent all of Thursday last week asking teenage girls in Sanganer village in Rajasthan to eat healthy under a UNICEF initiative. She should consider doing the same for her young urban fans too.

Contrary to perception, anaemia affects the affluent too, with one in three teenage girls affected in cities. “The poor can’t afford to eat healthy food, and those who can -don’t, because they prefer diet fads or junk food. Chikungunya cases rising

Capital is seeing arise in the number of chikungunya cases too. The city has reported 33 cases of the vector-borne disease so far this season, which is about three times higher than the total number of cases reported last year. Twelve cases of chikungunya were reported last year, and the number of cases were below 10 in the previous years.

Out of the 33 reported cases, only one person has travelled to Kerala, the rest have contracted the disease in Delhi.
Eight of these 33 cases alone have come from the Najafgargh area of south-west Delhi, the rest have been reported from various parts of the city including south Delhi. Read more

Dengue costs India almost $30m every year, says WHO

Two “neglected diseases” — dengue and cysticercosis — are costing India nearly $45 million between them every year.

According to WHO, around 1 billion of the world’s poorest people suffer from such neglected tropical diseases, mostly in urban slums. The global health watchdog said in its latest report the societal monetary cost of cysticercosis — an infectious disease caused by the pork tapeworm Taenia solium — is estimated to be $15.27 million while the economic burden of vector-borne dengue is estimated at $29.3 million. 96 new dengue cases in Delhi

Delhi Thursday reported 96 new cases of dengue, taking the number of people infected with the fever to 2,397.

The vector-borne disease has claimed five lives so far in the national capital.
‘No new deaths have been reported in the last three weeks,’ said N.K. Yadav, health officer of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Read more

'Women can handle old age pressures better than men'

A woman is emotionally more stronger than a man, goes a saying but now a new survey has found that due to their inner strengths, older women can handle old age pressures better than men.

46 per cent elderly women were found less isolated due to their inner strengths like patience, fine-tuning with family and society members than elderly men (31 per cent).

This was revealed by an all-India survey of 10,000 senior citizens in 20 states done by an NGO, Agewell Foundation. The survey aimed to know causes of isolation in old age and its consequences on the health of the elderly in particular and society in general. Read more

Rising dengue causes platelet crisis in Delhi

Laxmikant Prasad, 54, whose eight-year-old son Rajan has been diagnosed with dengue and a low platelet count, had a harrowing time on Saturday getting platelets (the required blood component) for his treatment. After running from one blood bank to another, he managed to get two units from Red Cross Society.

In this week alone, 17 new swine flu cases have been reported in the Capital, taking the tally to 31. According to the state health officials, while 27 of these cases are of locals, the remaining four either have travel history or are residents of other states. The data was procured from the Directorate of Health Services on Wednesday.

Until, last Friday, there were only 14 positive cases of H1N1 Influenza.
