It’s not always that a Congress rally in Poorvanchal, one of India’s most backward areas, sees a healthier turnout than that of Samajwadi Party. Not, at least, in an area with a strong Muslim presence.

But Rahul Gandhi seemed to have achieved this feat at his rally in Varanasi’s Beniabagh Ground on Saturday – crowds exceeding Mulayam Singh Yadav’s public meeting at the same ground five days ago. Opposition BJP on Monday took a dig at the Congress’s first family, saying Robert Vadra’s comment about joining politics was their internal family matter and hence the party would not like to comment on it.

Priyanka Gandhi’s husband Robert Vadra told reporters in Uttar Pradesh on Monday that he could join politics if people wanted it. This led to intense speculation about why the remark was made even as it was a reply to a straight question from reporters. Read more

Kicking off her election campaign in Uttar Pradesh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday attacked chief minister Mayawati for dismissing her ministers on election eve and asked whether this has cleansed her government.

“The present chief minister dismissed 21 of her ministers on election eve. She was not able to see their corruption in the past five years. I want to ask whether taking resignations made her government clean,” Gandhi said. Read more

Punjab polls: Six top guns of Punjab politics cast their votes in Lambi

As many as six top guns of Punjab politics, all from the native Badal village and including the three rival brothers – Parkash Badal (SAD), Gurdas Badal (PPP) and Maheshinder Singh Badal – cast their votes in the Lambi constituency on Monday.

The three brothers are contesting against each other from Lambi. While the incumbent chief minister Parkash Badal and Gurdas Badal are biological siblings, Maheshinder is their second cousin. Read more
